It’s 2015. Cafes are the new offices. Hit up these five places the next time you need to work on the go.
Austin & Austin
28 Austin St
This new coffee spot and bar is totally with the times. Remote working is encouraged here, with free Wi-Fi and charging stations/USB ports built into the bright orange lounge near the window. Its proximity to the universities makes this a prime spot for students wanting a break from the Barr Smith. The menu is devoted to soul food, and a few cups of 5 Senses coffee should help you churn through that essay. The upstairs gaming space should be called the procrastination area though – who’s going to resist a quick game of Mario Kart?
The Coffee Spot
Shop 48, Adelaide Arcade ground floor
There aren’t many spots that boast views overlooking Adelaide Arcade, so this location is pretty special. Head up the narrow staircase in the corner and you’ll be presented with a nice, quiet space that will make you feel a million miles away from Rundle Mall. Last time I was here I enjoyed a hot latte, typing away and occasionally glancing down to watch the world go by. Late afternoon is a serene time to visit.
Cafe 146
146 Gawler Place
At first glance this cafe down the southern end of Gawler Place looks like any other snack bar. But if you stop to notice the down arrow on the window pointing to its basement seating, you’ll be rewarded with one of the coolest hidden lounges in the CBD. I was gobsmacked upon walking into this huge space. Black leather couches, a table with magazines and a floor lamp in the corner as if it’s your loungeroom? What a prime typing spot. Staff are friendly and bring your food to you. It’s like being waited on in someone’s den.
Rendezvous Hotel lobby
55 Waymouth St.
We’ve entered the swankier side of things here. Sink into a suede couch, order a club sandwich and enjoy the dim hotel surrounds. Be prepared to overhear a lot of business conversations. Aside from comfort, food and service is great here.
Hello, Yes, 12 Eliza St
This seems like the kind of place where creative ideas are born. Bounce off the good vibes and take a single table along the back wall of the warehouse and let your fingers fly over the keyboard. When the weather is behaving, the couch near the entrance is a top spot. Coffee is always bang on, too.
