THE Parsafar family no longer needs to shop at a greengrocer — it gets everything it needs from neighbour Jack Condous’ garden.
Mr Condous, 75, of Prospect, is Johns Rd’s resident green thumb and has a range of vegetables and herbs planted on the front verge of his house.
The retired teacher says he loves sharing the produce with his neighbours.
“The mum from across the road comes over whenever she wants stuff whether that’s spinach or herbs,” Mr Condous says.
“The kids have taken a real interest in the garden and their dad is starting his own.
“Anyone who comes past, I say stop you’ve got to take something otherwise it goes to rack and ruins.
“It’s a good use of space and a good starting point to get to know people in the community.”
Mr Condous, and his garden, is being celebrated as Messenger Community News launches its latest Know Your Neighbour Campaign, to find Adelaide’s best neighbour.
The winner will receive $1000 and five runners-up will get $200 each, thanks to Credit Union SA.
Mr Condous’s garden includes herbs, eggplant, Chinese cabbage, capsicum, spinach, broccoli and rhubarb.
Hojjat Parsafar, who migrated to Australia from Iran three years ago, says Mr Condous is a great neighbour and inspired him to plant his own vegie patch.
His children Bahar, 9, and Pouriya, 7, visit Mr Condous as they love having fresh produce.
“It’s a beautiful garden and it’s very nice living near Jack because he is such a good neighbour,” Mr Parsafar says.
“He is always giving his vegies away to people and he is very good to the community.”
