OVERINDULGING at this time of year is easy, but the Heart Foundation warns Easter treats should be eaten in moderation.

Heart Foundation SA director of health Rachel McKay said eating “a little” chocolate over the four-day break was fine, as long as it was part of a balanced diet.

“Chocolate is often credited with having a positive influence on health due to its antioxidant properties, but there are much better ways to get those benefits without the unhealthy saturated fat and kilojoules that come with chocolate,” she said.

Ms McKay also recommended ditching the bacon and opting for poached rather than fried eggs for Easter Sunday breakfast.

“Australians can eat up to six eggs per week as part of a healthy balanced diet that is low in saturated fat,” she said.

“Going for a walk at some point during the day will also help to digest the tasty hot cross buns.”
