ADELAIDE’s Easter petrol prices are the cheapest in five years, and almost 10c a litre lower than in any other capital city.
And in good news for motoring holiday makers, regional unleaded petrol prices are also cheaper than almost all interstate capitals.
But Adelaide’s unleaded prices spiked during last month’s Adelaide Cup long weekend and the RAA said it would be disappointed if fuel retailers moved to do the same this long weekend.
Adelaide’s unleaded price averaged 119.8c a litre yesterday — almost equal to the wholesale price of 119.4c.
This retail price is significantly lower than the next cheapest capital, Sydney, which was 129.7c a litre, and the most expensive, Brisbane, at 136.6c a litre.
This means Adelaide motorists are paying almost $12 less than those in Brisbane to fill the tank of a family sedan.
Around the state, unleaded petrol prices in Clare, Kadina, Renmark, Bordertown and Victor Harbor were all below 130c a litre. But last long weekend in March petrol retailers raised prices by 15c a litre, to 135.9c a litre.
RAA senior analyst Chris West
said Adelaide prices were significantly lower because our price cycle was out of kilter with the rest of the nation.
“Adelaide prices are cheaper because the capital city price cycles are no longer in synch,’’ he said. “We are at the bottom of the discount cycle, while the others are only halfway through,’’ Mr West said.
“Motorists should hunt around for prices between 116c and 119c a litre.’’
